Copy in good condition. First edition, the issue with the dated title. Cordier cites a later edition, 1853. This work was published for the Univers series. Jouannin was first interpreter to the King and director of the college Louis-Le-Grand. He had studied at the Ecole des Jeunes de Langues in Constantinople, and he spent the years 1803-10 studying and travelling in the Levant. He visited the East again from 1817-26. Jouannin furnished notes and material for many authors who wrote on the Levant e.g. Dupre, Tancoigne, Andreossy. He also produced Statuquo d?Orient, 1839 and translations from the Persian.
