Stated First Printing, First Edition. The dust jacket, from 1953, is in very solid condition. You can see it in the first few photos. The front and spine each have a few tiny spots of smooth rubbing. The front also has a couple of small edge tears. The rear cover looks close to perfect. You can read a little bit more about the dynamic couple from the rear cover. The book itself is in excellent condition. The covers are very clean. Their edges and corners look perfect. No rubbing. The gilt and red lettering on the spine looks as new. The top page edge is a dark blue. The book is thick, 575 pages, but it is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. There are no binding issues. The pages are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them a number of times and haven't seen any soiling at all. There are two very thin tan lines on the middle page edge (3/4" long and 1/2" long). But neither one has any bearing at all on the actual pages (they do Not peek over the edge of any of the pages). The rest of the middle page edge is perfectly clean, as is the bottom page edge and the top page edge. The white inside covers and blank end papers (two in the front and four in the back) are all perfectly clean. There are 12 pages of black and white photographs in an Illustrations Section. They are all perfectly clean and free of any wear. 'Free of any wear' appears to be an accurate description of all of the pages in the book. I'm not seeing any creasing of any kind anywhere. Nor are there any markings. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Bravo, book. I don't think I mentioned that I've had the dust jacket in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book, which goes back a good number of years. Also, didn't reference the jackets flaps. They are white and perfectly clean. There is a thin 3/8th inch long tear off the top edge of the front flap and a tiny (1/16th of an inch) tear off the bottom edge of the front flap. They are both quite inconspicuous. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: 'Two Lives is the story of a remarkable marriage and two notable careers. In it, Lucy Sprague Mitchell, writer and one of the most influential educators of our time, tells of her own life and work and, in similar clear detail, of the life and work of her husband, who was one of the leading economists of our era. Their highly successful professional lives are told against a background of social history. Their personal lives were equally successful through thirty-six years of a marriage rich with love, humor, and humanity. The story of the Mitchell's is not only a dual-biography of two leaders of fascinating professions, it is also an inspiring delineation of the way in which mature, intelligent people can work out a dynamic and idealistic, and workable, philosophy of living and, as a result, play a part in shaping the world we live in. And it is, lastly, a love story of the very best kind, for it is warm, romantic-- and true.' The first paragraph of Wesley Claire Mitchell's Wikipedia profile seems worthy of being included: 'Wesley Clair Mitchell (August 5, 1874 -- October 29, 1948) was an American economist known for his empirical work on business cycles and for guiding the National Bureau of Economic Research in its first decades. Mitchell was referred to as Thorstein Veblen's "star student." Paul Samuelson named Mitchell (along with Harry Gunnison Brown, Allyn Abbott Young, Henry Ludwell Moore, Frank Knight, Jacob Viner, and Henry Schultz) as one of the several "American saints in economics" born after 1860.'.
