Second printing of the first trade edition (the first Unlimited Edition published by The Bodley Head in 1937) published in 1941. The second printing is unique as it was produced during the Second World War and is printed according to wartime paper restrictions - consequently, it is produced on very thin glossy paper, and the boards are very thin, unlike the post-war editions. This copy is exceptionally well-preserved. ***A near fine copy in dark green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and blind-embossed Homeric bow designed by Eric Gill to front board. The gilt is still beautifully bright (as if the dustwrapper had just recently been removed?). The cloth has retained it's beautiful dark green colour and has hardly faded, even to the spine, which is very unusual. Top and tail of spine slightly creased. No reading creases to the spine. Edges of text block slightly marked, mainly at the top edge. The binding is not strained, and the hinges are holding well, despite the weight of the paper used - there is no splitting at the hinges. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Interior pages clean. No bumping, creasing or tears to the thin paper. No dustwrapper. [Please see scans]. *** 212mm x 155mm. With a 'Previous editions of "Ulysses" list, plus 766 text-pages including detailed Appendices to the rear - Appendix A: detailing the trial of the Case of Sumner v. James Joyce December 1920 before a Court of Special Sessions of the District of New York - the prosecution was directed against The Little Review where 'Ulysses' was serialised, and the international protest against the unauthorised and mutilated edition of 'Ulysses' in the USA; ***Appendix B: A Letter from Mr Joyce to the Publisher of the First American Edition; The decision of the United States District Court rendered December 6, 1933, by Hon. John M. Woolsey lifting the ban on 'Ulysses'; the decision of the United States Court of Appeals, rendered August 7 1934; ***Appendix C: Bibliography of works by Mr. James Joyce. ***'This edition of the most discussed book of our age, besides being the complete text approved by the author, contains an appendix of documents relevant to the legal history of the book and a bibliography of Mr. Joyce's works. ***A second printing of the first unlimited edition of James Joyce's "Ulysses". Early printings of "Ulysses" in decent condition are becoming hard to come by now, and this 1941 issue - being produced to War Economy Standards - is very uncommon. The quality of the binding is indicative of the effects of the wartime paper rationing. It is not as robust as editions published from 1947 onwards. This copy is in really exceptional condition, and very rare thus. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 7965
