Beschreibung
Second printing (February, 1911); the first was in November , 1910. A collection of homespun and often humorous essays in rhyme by a newspaper columnist, "Uncle Walt" Mason. Contains an introduction by William Allen White, the famous small-town publisher of the Emporia (Kansas) Gazette, where Walt Mason worked as an editor. 189 pp. Arranged and decorated by Will Bradley, now best known for his poster designs. Includes a photograph frontispiece opposite the title page of the author with a facsimile inscription to the publisher. The designated frontispiece listed in the illustrations is a cartoon by John T. McCutcheon; other illustrations are by William Stevens. TEG and other side edges deckled. Bound in dark brown cloth. The front cover is decorated with an unusually bold title in orange over a scene in which a man, clearly the author himself, in a black vest and white shirt leans back in a chair, feet up, and appears to philosophize with a small audience of the faithful, who are dressed in the cloth brown, wearing a variety of hats. Untypically, the cover design has no border but bleeds to the very edge of the cover. Bradley's signature "B" is in the lower right hand corner. The spine has a mirthful mask, a simple orange line, and lettering in black. In the very scarce DUST JACKET with a cover that exactly matches the book, in the same colors though not as bright and including Bradley's "B." The jacket spine is similar but lacks the mirthful mask. The rear cover of the jacket describes Walt Mason as "a Killer of Gloom, Champion Smilesmith, and an Exalter of all nations -- all at one and the same time." Includes accolades from White, George Ade, and Elbert Hubbard. The flaps are blank. This copy has a small dark stain, about 1/4 inch in size, near the bottom of the side page edges from the title page up to page 31. The book is unmarked otherwise. The exterior cover is very fresh and bright. The dust jacket is missing an inch from the top of the spine and 1 1/2 inch from the bottom of the spine, not affecting front or rear sides of the jacket and is preserved in a mylar jacket.
