First Edition. -- Condition: Near fine, slight toning to spine, and wear to corners, in fine dust jacket with the exception of gentle rubbing to corners and a thin line of unnecessary colour touch up to spine and lower edge of front panel. -- Details: A superb example of the first edition in bright sharp dust jacket. By one of Dorothy Sayer's favourite authors who called him 'unsurpassed for creepy skill in mysterious adventures'. Joseph Jefferson Farjeon (1883-1955) was a British author of more than eighty novels, mostly crime and mystery, he was one of the first to mix romance with crime, however despite this he did not shy away from the sinister side. Dorothy L. Sayers described him as being 'unsurpassed for creepy skill in mysterious adventures'. In addition to his novels, Farjeon also wrote a number of plays, including Number Seventeen which was adapted for the big screen by Alfred Hitchcock. First edition, published the following year as 'Mystery Underground' by Collins, London in 1929. -- Octavo (19.7x13.8cm), pp. [2] vi [2] 307 [3]. In publisher's pale mint-green cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in dark green, top edge tinted green, foredge untrimmed, lower edge trimmed.
