Unpaignated quarto, nicely rebound in quarter-leather with decorated boards, 16 folding b/w plates, tight binding, mild wear to the colorful, marbled boards, clean brown leather backstrip with a slightly worn title block, soiled page edges, clean and unmarked pages, light foxing. Presuably the cause for the rebinding, in the rear, the ship building section from early edition of Encyclopedia Britannica (1794) has been inclduded. This accounts for the extra 4 plates beyond the noted 12 of the dictionary. This is determined by the labeling of the included plates of Andrew Bell's engravings of which many were included in the 1st-4th editions of Encyclopedia Britannica. An impressive copy of a highly collectible item, practical to this day. Illustrated With Variety of Original Designs of Shippin, in different situations; Together with seperate views of their Masts, Sails, Yards, and Rigging. To which is Annexed, a Translation of the French Sea-Terms and Phrases, collected from the Works of Mess. Du Hamel, Aubin, Saverien, &c. Falconer, a poet, whose verse gained him patronage, which resulted in him becoming a sailor and thus competent to describe the management of a vessel. Andrew Bell was apprenticed to the engraver Richard Cooper and co-founded Encyclopedia Britannica and became sole owner by 1793 after the death of Macfarquhar.
