"Ouvrage orné de gravures, contenant le tableau général des déportés, la vie et les causes de l'exil de l'auteur; des notions particulières sur Collot et Billaud, sur les îles Sechelles et les déportés de nivose, sur la religion, le commerce et les moeurs des sauvages, des noirs, des créoles et des quakers. Par Louis-Ange Pitou, Déporté à Cayenne, pendant trois ans, par jugement du Tribunal criminel du département de la Seine, et rendu à la liberté, par les lettres de grace de Sa Majesté l'Empereur." Both volumes with folding engraved frontispiece. ppI-XLVII,48-60,1-312 & (4),404 including half-titles. Edges of text-blocks red-speckled. Quarter sheepskin of the period. Smooth spines with modest gilt decorations, and titles and volume numbers on gilt-bordered maroon and dark green leather labels respectively. Rose-coloured marbled paper-covered boards with green outer corner tips. Original endpapers. Spines uniformly faded, with loss of sheen, and with dessicated appearance; a little loss at heads and tails and adjacent to splits along hinges. Spine of Vol. 2 also with uppermost 3cm previously detached and amateurishly glued back into position, and with chipped title-label missing letter 'G' from 'VOYAGE'. Upper headband of Vol. I hanging loose. Hinges of Vol. 1 split from heads to tails, with a little loss of hide at tail of front hinge and at head of rear. Front hinge of Vol. 2 with open split of length 9cm from head, along which a little loss of hide. Boards lightly marked, tips of outer corners lightly rubbed. Endpapers of both volumes a little adhesive-stained at inner corners; front endpapers split along hinges. One leaf of contents - pages 65/66 of Vol. 2 - with jagged-edged curved closed tear of length about 5cm, no loss of print or legibility of text. Contents otherwise with light toning towards edges and just occasional isolated spots. Top edges of text-blocks a little age-toned. Bindings holding quite firmly, though spines and hinges requiring attention, and spine of Vol. 2 a little wanting in appearance. Contents clean, tight and very good. GOOD copy.
