First edition of the first science fiction anthology. 36 volumes in eighteenth century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine panels ruled and dated in gold, brown leather title and volume labels, all edges stained red. A total of 70 engraved plates by various artists and a folded table in volume eight. Some sources give the work as thirty-nine volumes, but both Gove and Versins point out that the last three volumes (a work on shipwrecks) was simply tacked onto the set, and have nothing to do with the main work. Light wear to spine ends of some volumes and wear to corner tips of most; all volumes sound with tight outer joints. The set has been collated and is remarkably free of defects. An unusually clean set with the folded table and all 70 inserted plates, all but one half-title leaf, and all but one fly title. A very nice set of this monumental work.
