Quoting from the first page of this article: "Here is evidence on which is based a newly recommended schedule of two-dose primary immunization against poliomyelitis. In preparing a paper for presentation this morning (April 12, 1955) without prior knowledge of the details of Dr. Francis' report, it seemed best to orient the subject rather generally and let the evidence speak for itself. . . . This paper was presented at a Convocation at Ann Arbor, Mich., April 12, 1955, under the auspices of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and the University of Michigan." (p. 575). There was also a spiral-bound version of this paper, inside flexible printed wrappers, that was privately distributed. On April 12, 1955, at the University of Michigan, Thomas Francis, Jr., announced the results of a large, national, year-long field trial of the effectiveness of Jonas Salk's anti-polio vaccine. On the same day, Salk presented his own report on the vaccine. Salk had conducted his own small-scale field trials in 1952, and in 1953 had published his first report on the effectiveness of the vaccine (see Garrison-Morton 4672.2).
