1866. First edition. 57pp. Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878) was a Scottish historical writer, art historian and politician. He served as Member of Parliament for Perthshire from 1852 to 1868 and again from 1874 to 1878. He wrote and published several works. This book contains a lecture delivered by him, to the Philosophical Institution of Edinburgh, in 1866, in which we discusses the literary style of four writers - Bernard Diaz del Castillo, John Knox, Paolo Paruta, and Jacques Auguste de Thou. He writes in his intrtoductory remarks that "It is difficult to read any book without receiving certain impression of the character of the author, and impossible to read one which interests us wi1thoiut forming some theory as to his character in our own minds. His desire being to get at the man in the style, he has chosen to confine himself to a class of writers who offer peculiar facilities for attaining some personal knowledge of them - those who have written of their own times. The book is bound in contemporary half leather over marbled boards. There is no titling on the spine or front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and light bumping to the corners with a little loss to the leather on the corner tips. The spine ends are more heavily bumped with some damage and loss to the leather. The contents are tight and clean with light browning and foxing on the endpapers and a few faint foxing marks on the title page. An inscription reading "From the Author" has been written on the top edge of the title page and a name is written down the spine edge of the title page. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ScotGen349
