Foreword by John Dos Passos. This book presents the detailed story of the Bonus Marches of 1932 and 1933. In 1924, the US government had issued bonus certificates to American WWI veterans that could be redeemed for cash in 1948. Because so many of them were out of work during the Great Depression, 17,000 veterans and their families marched on Washington D. C demanding the certificates be redeemed early. President Hoover refused and the marches were violently broken up by the army, personally commanded by General Douglas MacArthur with Major George S. Patton commanding the 6 tanks backing up MacArthur's cavalry. Major Dwight D. Eisenhower was one of MacArthur's aides and attempted to disuade MacArthur from attacking. The bloody incident obviously had no impact on the officers' careers, but it did help FDR defeat Hoover in the 1932 election. Previous owner name on free endpaper. Text and photographs clean.
