(x), 196, (viii)pp. The Macmillan Company, With memoir by John Jay Chapman. Illustrated with photographs. Chapman graduated from Harvard, class of 1913. He was in Paris, studying architecture at the Ecole des Beaux arts, when the war broke out and immediately enlisted in the French Foreign Legion and served from August, 1914 to August, 1915, during which time he and his unit were under continual fire and he was wounded by a rifle bullet. He enlisted in French aviation on August 1, 1915 and was posted to Escadrille V.B. 108 as a mitrailleur-bombardier. After making application for aviation school, he entered the School of Military Aviation on 26 September, 1917. He received his brevet on 9 January, 1916. On 20 April he was assigned to the newly organized Escadrille Lafayette. He was wounded in combat on 17 June, 1917 and was killed in action northeast of Douaumont on 23 June, 1916. He received the Medaille Militaire and the Croix de Guerre, with two Palms. Small stain from binding adhesive on front endpaper, several pages with ting tears to fore edge, but a near fine, clean copy. Jacket dust soiled and with slight wear to edges with chipping to top and bottom of spine. Jacket not clipped.
