THE REESE COPY. London: F. Catherwood, 1844. First edition. Folio. Bound in publisher's original green morocco over moire cloth boards, gilt. Title gilt to front board and spine. Illustrated with one engraved map and 26 tinted lithographs on 25 plates on heavy paper. Extremities worn, hinges rubbed, spotting on most lithographs, light offsetting, small corner damage to Gateway to Teocallis print. This rare first edition, 300 copies, was published in both New York (by Bartlet and Welford) and London. It provides the best and most interesting images of Mesoamerican ruins by Frederick Catherwood (1799-1854), an English artist and architect. Catherwood was renowned for his meticulous and compelling illustrations of Maya scenes. He traveled extensively in Central America with American explorer John Lloyd Stephens (1805-1852). They visited Honduras, Guatamala, Chiapas, and the Yucatan from 1839-1841. Stephens published two very successful books of their travels in 1841 and 1843 with plates after Catherwood. This work was priced at 5 guineas for an uncolored issue and 12 guineas for the colored issue. There are bookplates on the front pastedown: Frederick DuCane Goodman (1834-1919, English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist), and J.J. Bowerbank L.L.D. (early 19th-century armorial bookplate). Also, from the collection of William S. Reese (1955-2018), who was one of the great Americana booksellers. His firm continues to trade in New Haven. After his death, Christie's New York sold his private collection (24-25 May 2022; the present item was lot 313). Hill p. 47; Palau y Dulcet 50290; Sabin 11520; Tooley 133; Von Hagen, Search for the Maya: The Story of Stephens and Catherwood (1973), pp. 320-324. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers AMB0079
