Leutmann (1667-1736) studied theology and mathematics at Wittenberg and in 1725 became Professor of Mechanics and Optics at the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. Provenance: Signed on the flyleaf by Henry Voigt, 1738-1814, Chief Coiner of the first US Mint, who designed some of the earliest American coins. Voigt was a Phila-delphia clock & instrument maker who did work for Thomas Jefferson, and contributed to the cause of the American Revolution with innovations in manufac-turing machinery.
