A first edition of this novel by Hugh Stowell Scott, written under his pseudonym 'Henry Seaton Merriman'. First edition, fourth impression. Hugh Stowell Scott (1862 or 1863 - November 19, 1903) was an English novelist (under the pseudonym of Henry Seton Merriman). He worked with great care, and his best books held a high place in Victorian fiction. In a blue cloth binding. Externally sound, though with some marks and some bumping. Lightly rubbed. Spine slighltly cocked. Hinges slightly strained. Internally, binding strained. Library label to front pastedown. Pages are bright, though with some scattered spotting throughout. Good. In most instances the plates are close, but the plate called for at page 67 of the Vultures can be found at page 31, and the plate called for at page 88 can be found at page 97. In the Velvet Glove, the plate called for at page 12 can be found at page 30. Writing under the pen name Henry Seton Merriman, Hugh Stowell Scott was an English novelist best known for his novel, The Sowers. With three pages of publisher's adverts to the front and rear paste downs and front and rear endpapers of both volumes. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front cover of both volumes, 'E. L. Trollope'. Their inscription can also be found to the title page of the Velvet Glove. Undated. Date approximated using JISC from estimates of the University of Oxford.
