Beschreibung
335 pp, 9 1/2" H - green boards with gilt lettering/decoration on spine and front board. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, technical drawings. "with An Account of Our Early Contract System, and the Other So-Called Private Armorers - Simeon North, Lemuel Pomeroy, Nathan Starr, Asa Waters and Henry Derringer." "The pioneering work of Eli Whitney - in departing from the customary and long-established methods of manufacturing firearms - had such a profound influence on the production of this complicated mechanism that any account of his work lends itself readily to a discussion of the early contract system and the contractors who, by their combined efforts, developed the system to the extent that it became the basis of mass-production methods which have made American manufacturing achievements outstanding." from the Introduction. Book has cigarette odour, light browning to the pages and to the inside hinges, two areas of waviness on the last page and on the free rear endpaper; light to moderate browning to the edges of the text block, spine and edges of the boards; the remains of a card pocket glued to rear pastedown (some surface paper loss on both endpapers), but no other indications that this was ever a library book; moderate edge wear to the boards and top/bottom of the spine.
