FIRST SHEPARD EDITION. 1st printing. 8vo. ( 7.6 x 5.2 inches). The 38th edition overall, this is the first time the story was published with Shepard`s beautiful line drawings. Two neat previous owner names on the front blank free endpaper and with some very light foxing to the fore edge, otherwise a near fine copy bright and tidy throughout. Publishers original green cloth binding with gilt illustrations of characters to front board. Spine lettered in gilt. A couple of tiny bumps to the top of the rear board and spine but generally a sharp and clean copy, the gilt still bright and vibrant. Decorative map endpapers drawn by Shepard and showing all the Characters homes. Top edge dyed green. A near fine, superior of this lovely book. -- More photos available on request. Originally published in 1931, Shepard coloured his own line illustrations for this edition. He also at the same time coloured his illustrations for the Winnie the Pooh books of A. A. Milne. A little rubbing and bumping to the board edges but overall a near fine clean copy in publishers tan cloth boards with blind stamped illustration of Toad smoking a cigar to front board. Spine lettered in gilt. Original full colour dustwrapper has just a hint of fading to the spine but is generally bright and clean and with the original price still intact on the front inner flap. Finely bound in recent full dark green morocco leather binding, spine with raised bands, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled border on boards. Top edge gilt. Original dark green cloth front cover, showing Toad, Ratty and Mole, all in gilt, bound in at rear. ----- The thirty eighth edition overall, this is the first to feature the wonderful drawings by Shepard which haven't been out of print since.
