Beschreibung
First edition, English-language issue, of publisher Tolmer's famous Art Deco picture book with stunning images hand colored in pochoir. Printing house Tolmer made their name in the 19th century by designing graphics for packaging and publications, and went on to design French propaganda posters in World War I. This poster aesthetic carried over into their books, which were known for their bold pochoir Art Deco illustrations. Alfred Tolmer's 1930 treatise on book design, MIS EN PAGE, was touted for "single-handedly smoothing the edges off orthodox modernism," and bringing Deco to the masses (Heller). This title, with its around-the-world plot, reflects the French fascination with and condescension towards foreign countries during a time when air travel was first beginning to make the world a bit smaller. LUDO describes caricatures of the people in nearly every country he visits, their different ways of living presented as a contrast to his ideal life in Normandy. Between its aesthetic and perception of non-European subjects, a vivid and complex snapshot of 1920s French culture. 7'' x 7.25''. Original color pictorial boards. Illustrated in color throughout. [48] pages. Front board uniformly a bit toned, with mild sunning to spine. Sharp and vibrant. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 14773
