The first major collection of Kondratiev's works in English. Kondratiev has been hugely influential and "is known worldwide for his speculative and controversial hyotheseis of long cycles of economic activity of some fifty to sixty years duration, a version of his work having been published in English in 1926". By 1930 he had been arrested by Stalin's police and placed in solitary confinement for making political criticisms and "daring openly to disagree with an authoritarian and increasingly paranoid regime". He was judicially murdered by the regime in 1938. Like many of the major economists he also saw the predatory nature of the elite's extraction of rents derived from the unearned special location quality or natural advantages of land, the value of which is produced by the economic creativity of society as a whole. In his Russia this enriched the landowning classes and impoverished the multitudinous peasantry. In modern society it has created the collapse of many national economies by the mortgage-selling bank's predatory extraction of rents creating periodic booms and slumps. To undermine this anti-social self advancement he even proposed a version of the land taxes espoused by his contryman Leo Tolstoy.
