First appearance of James' first short novel, Watch and Ward, published here in five parts (complete). A heavily revised version of the novel was issued in 1878 in book form, though James was ashamed of the book and largely disowned it, preferring instead to cite Roderick Hudson as his debut novel. Spine crown heavily chafed with some fraying to spine tips; short split to cloth along upper rear spine joint, light foxing and spotting internally and to page ends, else a VG copy.
