This is a collection of 200 drawings associated with World War I, "THE WESTERN FRONT - Drawings by Muirhead Bone." 1917 1st edition; Doubleday, Page & Company; New York. Complete set in two volumes. Each volume contains five separate softcover "Parts"; each Part contains 20 bound Muirhead Bone illustrations. Some (but not all) of the illustrations have a hint of color. With an Introduction by General Sir Douglas Haig, commander of the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front. Muirhead Bone was a Scottish etcher and watercolorist who became known for his depiction of industrial and architectural subjects and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. Each volume comes with its original slip case. The volumes measure 13" tall x 10" wide. Here are a few examples of the illustrations: A Fleet Seascape; Sailors Making Munitions; Practice Firing; The Howitzer Shop; Thawing Out; Indian Cavalry; Ruins Near Arras; Sleeping Wounded from the Somme; Watching German Prisoners; The Night Picket; Dug Outs; The Happy Warrior; British Troops on the March; Embarking the Wounded.and much more. Condition: The set is in overall Very Good+ condition with only a few minor condition issues, as follows.VOLUME I: Part III - Plate #53 has a small stain at the bottom of the illustrations, and a mirroring stain of the facing page. Part V - Title page has a small, light stain at the outer margin; LXXXII has a light stain on the plate description page; Plate LXXXV has a tiny hole through the page. VOLUME II: Part V - The back cover has a light foxing spot at the left edge. The Volume I slip case has a 2" x 1" piece missing at the bottom edge of the right-edge panel; separation of the panels at the corners of the opening; partial separation where the back panel meets the left-side panel.
