Three volumes completing Winkle's depiction of the cathedral churches of England and Wales, one early printing and two first editions. A set complete in three volumes, volume I undated (assumed first edition), volumes II and III the first editions of 1838 and 1842, published in uniform publisher s cloth bindings. An architectural study of the cathedrals of England and Wales, illustrated with sixty-one full page plates to vol. I, II, and III, including frontispieces. Collated, complete. An historical and descriptive account of numerous cathedrals of England and Wales, each accompanied by some lovely plates depicting both the interiors and exteriors, the drawings made from sketches by Robert Garland and engraved by Benjamin Winkles. Including chapters on Canterbury cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral, Bristol Cathedral, and Oxford Cathedral among others. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with new endpapers. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the occasional leaf, particularly to the leaves of plates, although, generally, the pages are bright and clean throughout. Illustrated with sixty-one full page plates to vol. I, II, and III, including frontispieces. Vol I [vi], xx, 144pp, 61 plates including the illustrated title. Vol II viii, 140pp, 61 plates including the illustrated title. Vol III xii, 160pp, 61 plates including the illustrated title. Provenance: prize plate for Thomas Grimson to the front end paper.
