Extremities lightly rubbed, boards a little dusty. Tape mark and POI to front pastedown: 'To Joan/ With Love, From Lilian/ Christmas 1943'; Joan's address in pencil to rear endpaper. Toned and a little shaken, else, clean and tidy. The successful Australian novelist, Helen de Guerry Simpson, Lady Browne, (1897 1940) was a member of The Detection Club, collaborated with Clemence Dane on a trio of novels, as well as, briefly, being a British Liberal Party politician. Erna Pinner ( 1890-1987), a celebrated German Jewish artist, doll designer and biologist, emigrated to the UK in 1935. This title was re-issued as a Puffin Story Book, A Woman Among Savages in 1950. 'Horizon Books supply answers worth hearing to questions which were worth asking' (Catalogue): Nelson's Horizon Books (1937-1941) were a series of 12 (announced, but only 11 published) new books aimed at young adults.
