Full title: The Works of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. together with His Life, and Notes on His Lives of the Poets, by Sir John Hawkins, Knt. In Fifteen Volumes (1787-1789). Containing his fiction, biographies, essays, political writings and literary criticisms. Frontis portrait engraved by John Hall. Armorial bookplate of Charles Smith. Volumes 1 through 11 were printed in 1787 for J. Buckland, etc. and are titled as being "The Works of Samuel Johnson in Eleven Volumes." Volumes 12 and 13, also dated 1787, were printed for John Stockdale and titled as "The Works of Samuel Johnson in Thirteen Volumes." Volume 14, also printed for John Stockdale but dated 1788, is titled, "The Works of Samuel Johnson in Fourteen Volumes." Volume 15 was printed Elliot and Kay in 1789 and titled "The Works of Samuel Johnson in Fifteen Volumes." Volumes showing some general expected overall wear and rubbing, typical scattered foxing and a few tender hinges and missing volume numbers, text blocks remain tight.
