Beschreibung
nicely bound in full maroon calf with gilt decoration of covers and spine showing moderate to heavy wear. all edge gilt. Contents generally very good, but many pages are loose. There is no publication date stated, but the preface is dated 1869 and there is a gift inscription at the front of the book in ink dated 1870. The title page states that the book is translated from the French work "Le Monde de la Mer" by Moquin Tandon. The most remarkable features of this book are the plates. There is no list of plates or illustrations but there are 19 full pages plates with about a third of those having beautiful color. It is an early example of color printing. The plates vary widely in content with some being ships to others being illustrations of sea creatures. There are hundreds of b&w test illustrations. There are some markings suggesting the book was in a library- probably a private library. There are blindstamps on the title pages and on a few pages inside the book and there is an inventory number written in gold ink on the spine at the bottom. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 2353
