Volume 1 Only - Blue cloth with bright gold gilt titling to spine and front as well as a beautiful gilt decoration of a Chinese temple on front. Top edge of textblock is bright gilt. Frontispiece and 46 plates. Discarded by the Library of Congress due to a duplicate already owned. One small paper label and one small stamp on the FFEP are only sign of ex-library. This is the last published work of Bird, one of the most famous of all women travelers. For this book, Bird traveled up the Yangtze and Han rivers in China and Korea in 1897. Bird was 64 when she took this journey through a dangerous and chaotic part of China and Korea. This trip took her 13,000 km, up the Yangtze River by boat and then overland through Sichuan to Tibet. Quite exceptional for a Victorian English woman. She was the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society, an honorary fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, a member of the Royal Photographic Society and an honorary member of the Oriental Society of Peking.
