ÒThe object of the author is, to enter into the minute details of the NurseÕs duty to the Infant, during the first month of its life. In his own practice, he has often seriously felt the inconvenience of the want of information, in this respect, on the part of the Nurse; and it was this which chiefly induced him to prepare these pagesÓ (preface). The present work details the Òqualifications necessary to constitute a good Nurse,Ó Òconduct of the Nurse in the sick room,Ó Òduties of the nurse during labor,Ó and instructs nurses and mothers in a range of infant care topics from proper feeding and clothing to common ailments. It also contains information on pregnancy and postpartum care for mothers, including illnesses experienced after birth and their remedies. Dr. Richard Sharp Kissam (1808 Ð 1861) was a surgeon, lecturer, and educator. He served as a Professor of Surgery at Castleton Medical College beginning in 1845 and, around the same time, undertook a major project to revitalize Bellevue Hospital in New York, which was then a pauperÕs hospital that had fallen into disrepair and poor management. He was also one of the earliest members of the New York Academy of Medicine, which was founded in 1847. Twelvemo. 152 pp. Contemporary floral patterned brown cloth titled in gilt.
