Tribune médicale, 1895. "Étude du corset au point de vue de l'exercice de la bicyclette" (pp, 110-26). Revue mensuelle du Touring-Club de France, juillet 1895. "Le corset" (pp. 126-31). Gaches-Sarraute was very critical of the corsets in use in her day. But she was hardly anti-corset. In fact she designed her own corset. In her book she compares her corset favorably to the existing corsets that she regarded as medically harmful (often with side-by-side photos, some of which are included here). She illustrates the use of her corset not only on adult women but also on girls (ages 9 and 12). I found online two good sources of information about Gaches-Sarraute and the corsets of her day: 1. "Fashion and Feminism: Dr. Inès Gaches-Sarraute and the Hunt for a Healthful Corset", and 2. this Ph.D. thesis (1998), "Historic Medical Perspectives of Corseting and Two Physiologic Studies with Reenactors", by Colleen Ruby Gau. In this thesis, Gaches-Sarraute is discussed, very critically, on pp. 79, 112, 115, 119. In addition to its wealth of historical information, this thesis is especially interesting because of experiments conducted by the author on the effects of corset: "One straight-front corset designer was Doctor Josephine Ines Gaches-Sarraute; she made many assertions in French medical journals about the efficacy of her corsets which were repeated with full conviction by physicians around the world. Unfortunately, I believe she was completely wrong; the studies I performed indicated her corset did not allow enhanced physical performance, rather it restricted the subjects more severely. In every category of testing, the straight-front corset actually created more troubles for the wearers than did the hourglass corset style when laced to the same degree. The pelvis was pushed down in front, creating a severe lumbar curvature [sway-back] and this posture changed the center of gravity which caused stress to be placed differently on joints and muscles (p. 79).".
