The Elements was not universally popular, upsetting many businessmen with its support for free trade. It was, however, very successful and widely used, being 'distinctly a textbook' (Palgrave), aiming to render the doctrines of political economy in a serviceable manner for students and merchants, rather than give them 'scientifically truthful' but opaque treatment.
