Beschreibung
Chapman & Hall, Ltd. London. 1934. 247 pages; 246 numbered. First edition, first printing. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are sound. Brown cloth is stamped in gold on front panel and on spine. Rubbing to cloth along edges. Small faint stain to front panel. Internally bright and clean. Ever-so-slight lean; barely. Bernard Darwin is the grandson of (and raised by) Charles Darwin. The author is also an inductee into the Golf Hall of Fame. This is his classic golf title Playing the Like. Laid-into this book is a vintage life-size (small) 13 page photocopy of one particular chapter of James Grierson's 1807 holy grail of golf literature Delineations of St. Andrews. Delineations of St. Andrews was written as a history book of the Scottish town St. Andrews, coincidently the town where the first golf club originated. The chapter is titled "The Company of Golfers" and considered to be the earliest important literature on the sport of golf. One passage in the laid-in copy has red underlining of a passage that explains the antiquated golf phrase "the like" further explaining how Bernard Darwin came up with the title of his book. VG.
