Beschreibung
Boston, octavo, xlii, [25]-337 p., 58 woodcut text figures, and publisher's catalogues at front and rear. ***CONTENT: Hugh Miller (1802-1856), was a self-taught Scottish geologist, philosopher, folklorist and prolific writer, whose early employment as a stonemason sparked a passion for the study of geology. An enthusiastic fossil collector, Miller was also a devout evangelical Christian, and was skeptical that later species were descended from earlier forms. Herein, he attempts to reconcile geological and paleontological principles with biblical doctrines of creation and development. The author describes Old Red (Devonian) fossil fishes and the early evolutionary ideas of Lamarck and others. Reviewers of Miller's literary style, including Agassiz, Buckland, and Murchison, noted the "purity, elegance, liveliness," and "poetical" nature of his writings. Miller was a gifted wordsmith who made scientific observations accessible to the educated public. In his lifetime, he became celebrated across the English-speaking world. In the pre-Darwinian era, Miller's works inspired an interest in geology, scientific investigation, and the earthly works of the Creator. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, near-Fine copy in the original, embossed green cloth covers, with gilt titles on the backstrip.
