Marbled endpapers, later ownership inscription to recto of front blank fly-leaf, scattered foxing. An early Victorian edition of Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon's (1609-1674) monumental history of the English Civil War. First published between 1702 and 1707 (with the first octavo edition appearing in 1705-1706), Clarendon's work remains the most highly valued contemporary account of the conflict, celebrated for it's clear rhetoric, balanced assessment of events, and sophisticated scholarship.
