Exemplaire bien complet de la carte dépliante, représentant la Marche progressive du Choléra Morbus en Asie et en Europe depuis 1817 jusqu'en 1832. Reliure en demi chagrin maroquiné noir d'époque à coins. Dos à nerfs orné de caissons décorés, roulettes et filets. Plats de papier noir maroquiné avec double filet gras de séparation. Tranches dorées. Gardes moirées jaunes. Dans l'ensemble un papier bien blanc, mais quelques pâles rousseurs éparses, notamment provoquées par la présence des serpentes. Frottements, notamment aux coins. Une étiquette de bibliothèque en tête du premier tome. Bel exemplaire. Ex-libris aux armes, bibliothèque du palais Auersperg, avec un numéro de rangement. Furstilich Auersperg'sche Bibliothek in Wien. Le juif errant est un des plus grands succès de librairie du XIXe siècle, paru juste après Les mystères de Paris. Aux qualités de narration des Mystères de Paris, Le juif errant ajoute l'intervention du surnaturel et du fantastique, représentés par le vagabond légendaire qui donne son nom au livre. Précédé par le choléra, qui inspire à Sue des pages d'anthologie, le Juif légendaire revient d'au-delà des mers et d'au-delà des siècles pour empêcher la Compagnie de Jésus de s'emparer d'une fabuleuse fortune en éliminant un par un ses héritiers. Le juif errant étant un roman d'aventures se déroulant aux quatre coins du monde. Il entraîna en France un mouvement anti jésuite. Si Eugène Sue est plus ou moins oublié aujourd'hui, il était non seulement l'un des romanciers les plus célèbres du XIXe siècle mais le plus lu en Europe (la provenance prestigieuse de cet exemplaire en témoigne), et même Dostoievski était coutumier de sa lecture. Peu d'écrivains de cette époque ont bénéficié des qualités éditoriales dont font preuves Les mystères de Paris et Le juif errant, abondamment et superbement illustrés.
