London, octavo, xv, [1], 211 p., 3 lithographed plates and map of the mines and collieries. ***CONTENT: Mawe was an English mining engineer, mineral dealer, and mineralogist, born in Derbyshire in 1764. He was commissioned to collect British minerals by the King of Portugal, and was later invited to visit the gold, diamond and other productive mineral workings in Brazil. This volume is the first edition of Mawe's first published work, valuable for its detailed account of the geology and mines of Derbyshire, the richest mining region in Britain. Chapters describe the topography and strata of the region, with consideration of mine workings, lead ores, iron, lead, coal, salt, fluorospar, and copper mines, and much more. His map of Derbyshire shows the location of more than 70 mines and collieries. ***CONDITION: A clean, near Fine copy in the original paper-covered boards and paper backstrip, with the original printed-paper spine label. The covers are well preserved, with some rubbing to the extremities; the spine paper is mildly chipped, but the title label is complete and distinctly legible. Joints and hinges expertly reinforced, binding very firm. Page edges untrimmed. There is overall toning and light offsetting from the plates onto adjacent pages, but otherwise the text is clean, crisp and bright. The plates, showing sections in various mines, are particularly fresh, bright and clean. There are no previous ownership indications. This is a very handsome copy of a scarce and important treatise in its original state. BMNH 1271. Ward and Carozzi 1526. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
