L'illustration, aussi remarquable qu'abondante, est composée de 306 planches gravées à l'eau-forte, dont 113 doubles avec une dépliante, d'un portrait équestre de Louis XV au premier tome par C. Mathey, d'un bandeau sur cuivre aux armes du Roi, de 6 vignettes de titre gravées sur bois, 6 bandeaux historiés gravés sur cuivre, de bandeaux et culs-de-lampe gravés sur bois. Avec tables des matières et index. Reliures en plein veau d'époque, dos à six nerfs, pièces de titre de maroquin rouge et de tomaison de maroquin vert, entrenerfs richement ornés de fleurons dorés, double filet à froid sur les plats, roulette dorée sur les coupes, épidermures et petits manques dus à un travail de vers aux plats, coiffes, coins et coupes. Galeries de vers en marge de certains feuillets sans atteinte au texte. Gardes de papier à la cuve restaurées en marge. Ouvrage fondateur de la muséographie médiévale, l'entreprise monumentale et indéniablement prolifique sur les monuments et objets du Moyen Âge constitue un véritable musée imaginaire des origines de la nation française. Malgré son opinion partagée sur la période médiévale qu'il qualifie lui-même de «?tems grossiers?», Bernard de Montfaucon (1655-1741), bénédictin de la congrégation de Saint-Maur, fut parmi les premiers à s'intéresser aux «?siècles de barbarie?» et à prendre conscience de la disparition progressive d'un patrimoine national indispensable à la compréhension de l'histoire française. Grâce au concours du réseau mauriste disséminé à travers la France et à la rigueur méthodologique et scientifique de ces érudits, Montfaucon constitue un répertoire chronologique d'images reproduisant des sculptures, objets d'art, sceaux, enluminures ou monuments français. Parmi les plus notables, on remarquera les 15 planches reproduisant pour la première fois la tapisserie de Bayeux. Chaque image est accompagnée de sa description et d'un texte donnant l'historique de chaque règne. Bernard de Montfaucon déroule ainsi la trame de l'histoire à travers le prisme des objets d'arts. Il justifie son parti pris historique dans sa préface?: «?Je ne prétends point donner l'histoire de France dans toute son étendue?: mais elle sera plus détaillée que tous les abrégés, et elle aura cet avantage sur les autres, qu'elle représente un très grand nombre de figures tirées des originaux des tems?». Provenance : bibliothèque Seguin de Broin avec ses ex-libris imprimés aux contreplats de certains volumes (armes de gueules à une givre d'or passant, un chef d'azur chargé de trois étoiles d'argent), gravés à l'eau-forte par Louis Gabriel Monnier en 1764. Ce sont les armes du comte Edmé Seguin de Broin (1695-1783), successivement Receveur des impositions du bailliage de Nuits, Receveur des épices à la Chambre des comptes de Dijon, Secrétaire du roi au Parlement de Dijon, et Seigneur de Broin et de Bonnencontre, à l'origine de la dynastie Seguin de Broin, de Dijon. Ex-libris imprimés aux armes du Baron de Nervo aux contreplats des volumes. Cette précieuse bibliothèque, formée par l'amiral Olympe-Christophe, premier baron de Nervo (1765- 1835), fut considérablement enrichie par la suite par son arrière-petit-fils, le bibliophile Jean de Nervo (1881-1934), qui réunit dans son château de Montmarie, en Auvergne, une collection de 20 000 volumes de choix.
