Thirteen loose images showing the devastation wrought by the Hong Kong typhoon of 1906. The photos are 3 x 4 ¼ inches. The typhoon of September 18, 1906 was a major natural disaster, causing widespread damage with an estimated loss of life of 4,000-10,000 in Hong Kong. Many vessels were broken up or sunk and the wharf, warehouses and other structures along the harbor severely damaged. This archive shows damage to shipping in the harbour, piers and wharves and the waterfront. The images are of the West Kowloon and Yau Ma Tei area. The German steamer shown is the Petrarch, which was pushed onto the steamers Emma Luykin and Monteagle, then onto the Kowloon Wharf. The HMS Phoenix was a sloop, (launched in 1895) that had seen action during the Boxer Rebellion; it capsized onto Yau Ma Tei. The French gun boat is the French destroyer Fronde, which collided with another vessel, killing several French sailors. A large 1908 memorial in Happy Valley cemetery to French victims from the Fronde was recently restored; it is one of the few remaining physical reminders in Hong Kong of this typhoon. The American sailing ship is the S.P. Hitchcock (launched in 1883).
