[PHOTO ALBUM] [TRANSPORTATION ? Steamship] [GERMANY ? Pre-WWII] Edwin Brindley. Nicely annotated photograph album with a title written in period ink on inside front cover, ?A Souvenir of a Short Trip to Germany on the Hamburg South American Liner (20,000 Tons) ?Monte Pascoal?. August, 1935? with the initials ?E.B.? written in the lower left corner. The album measures 8.5 x 5.75 inches and the blue covers are bound together with heavy twine around a celluloid piece; 20 leaves (40 pages) with 27 photographs mounted on the first 26 pages (the last 14 pages are blank). All but four of the photographs measure 4.25 x 3.25 inches; one of the others is a RPPC of the ship; and three are smaller photos. All but one of the photographs are neatly titled in the same neat hand as the title. One of the photographs identifies a man by the name of Edwin Brindley, so we are assuming that the ?E.B.? initials beneath the album title are his. Another clue that the album may have originated from a person in England is the name of the album ? it is a ?BarCord? / Photograph Album / Made in England. The Monte Pascoal was built in 1930 by Blohm & Voss of Hamburg, Germany. After her launch she was on the Germany to South America run for several years. In 1933 she operated a series of cruises between Hamburg and Greenwich. The date of this voyage, plus the notation in the title of a ?Short Trip to Germany?, suggests that this album documents a voyage from England to Germany with shipboard views as well as places visited in Germany. When World War II broke out in 1939, the Monte Pascoal was in Rio de Janeiro. She quickly sailed to Germany with not passengers and was taken over by the Kreigsmarine for use as an accommodation ship. She was sunk in a 1944 air raid, refloated, and after the war was seized by Great Britain as part of the Allied distribution of German naval assets. In 1946 she was scuttled in the Skaggerck, allegedly with a large cargo of gas bombs. The photos taken in pre-WW II Hamburg include ?Ashore at Hamburg. Sunday afternoon Aug 4. Coaches about to leave for a Tour to Sachsenwald, The Bismarck Mausoleum and Museum at Friedrichsruh. Note the Elevated Railway?; ?Bier Garden at Friedrichsruh. Frank is inside. Note Nazi flag ? in evidence everywhere?; ?Level Crossing at Friedrichsruh / The Express for Berlin passed shortly after this at (according to our Guide) 80 PPH.? Bismarck?s Home is nearby.?; ?August Bank Holiday. Aug 5. 8 AM starting Tour to Lubeck and Travemunde.?; ?Tuesday. Aug 6th / Start of sightseeing Tour of Hamburg. Visit to the Rathaus and Hagenbeck?s Famous Animal Park?; ?Lubeck. Market Square.?; ?Lubeck. Schiffengesellschaft. The Ancient Shippers Guild. Yard in Stein St.?; ?Hamburg. Dach St Channel.?; and an untitled view of a man on a deck chair on land with large buildings in the back ground. Also included is a real photo post card of the ?Monte Pascoal?. The remainder of the photographs were taken while aboard ship and include a view of ?The ?Monte Sarmiento?, a sister ship, about to leave for Norway as we entered the Harbour at Hamburg on Sunday Aug 4th 3:30 PM?; ?Aboard ?Monte Pascoal? crossing the North Sea. Sat AM Aug 3rd ?A Deck Game?; ?Another Deck Game? showing two men (Frank and Bob) on deck chairs, Sat Aug 3.; ?On the Boat Deck / Frank & Teddy? ? two men on deck chairs; ?Frank in Pensive Mood? on deck; on the Promenade Deck showing two women and a man; on the Boat Deck showing two couples; ?On Boat Deck / Yours very sincerely / Edwin Brindley?; ?A Sunny Interlude / Returning across the North Sea.
