A set of 6 b/w photos from Camera Press's ?Heads of the Arabian American Oil Company? series. Each approx 12x17cm with printed caption label and ink stamp to the verso. The conditions are good or better, with some corner creasing, minor scuffing at the edges, and a couple of short closed tears. The photographers are not named. They are undated but circa mid-1950s, when Aramco was moving its HQ from the US to Saudi Arabia. This was at the insistence of Ibn Saud, who'd said "Every time there's a decision to be made you have to refer it to New York. In the future let's refer it here" (Time, 24 Mar 1952). The subjects are: 1) J.T. Duce, VP in charge of Government Relations; 2) William A. Eddy, Middle East Consultant; 3) R.A. Eeds, VP in charge of Industrial Relations; 4) Norman Hardy, Executive VP; 5) R.L. Keyes, President; and 6) F.W. Ohliger, VP in charge of Concession Affairs?. JAMES TERRY DUCE (d 1965) position was considered "an extremely sensitive liaison post between the business of the company and the government of the country. (He) impressed upon others the significance of cross-cultural education for Arabia-bound American employees and their families". He also helped forge relations with the CIA, before which Aramco had "drawn liberally" on former OSS staff for its relations work (Al Rasheed and Vitalis, 2004; Aramco 1999). BILL EDDY (1896-1962) became the US Navy and OSS' Special Assistant to the American Minister in 1943, to build relations with Saudi Arabia and its neighbours. He became Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Saudi in 1944-6, trusted by both Ibn Saud and FDR to translate for them during their famous meeting aboard the USS Quincy in 1945. After a stint in Yemen, he worked for the CIA in 1946, Aramco in 1947, Tapline in 1952, and helped maintain stable Aramco?Saudi relations. He retired in 1956 (Aramco 1962). RA EEDS, a ?roughneck, driller, and engineer? came to Saudi in 1950, became General Manager Operations in 1952, VP in 1955, and Director in 1958-9 (Aramco 1959:1). NORMAN HARDY was Aramco?s Executive VP (May 1956-9), President (1958-9), CEO (1959-61), and Chair (1959-68). He "helped bring Aramco into the corporate big leagues", strengthened budgetary controls, and established its Management Committee. He "had learned Malay, was determined to learn Arabic. Long before his retirement in 1960 he had initiated the practice of addressing Aramco employees over the company's television station in Arabic? (Aramco 1984; Saudi Aramco 2006: 148). BOB KEYES was President from 1952 until retirement in 1957 when Hardy took over. FLOYD OHLIGER (d 1993) was there at the outset when he ?waded ashore? at al-Hasa. He worked with Ibn Saud in 1952, moving Aramco?s corporate offices from New York to Dhahran, and interceded with him for Catholics to practice their religion. He retired in 1958 (Anderson, 1981: 110; Saudi Aramco, 1984: 20-33). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 4753
