1stedn; DVD, running time: 34 minutes. Lin Yueh-hwa s autobiographical novel about his native village The Golden Wing: A Sociological Study of Chinese Familism (1948) is now considered a classic ethnography. In 2015, I began editing a new book by Professor Zhuang Kongshao, subsequently published in 2018 as The Silver Wings: Local Society and Cultural Change in China (1920s-1980s). Zhuang's ethnography was a restudy of the community Lin Yueh-hwa (Lin Yaohua) wrote about in his 1947 autobiography entitled The Golden Wing. I reread Lin's book, and somewhat to my surprise, almost every passage resonated closely with what I had recorded on film on Taiwan in a village in the 1970s. I therefore selected some passages from his book and matched them with topically appropriate visual sequences from my teaching films about Taiwan, for example Chapter 7 where he describes farming and Chapter 10 where he describes a woman s funeral. The result of this experiment, which I have entitled The Golden Wing on Taiwan, integrates both written text and filmic events. This film merges images from Taiwan with verbal ethnographic description from Fujian to provide students with a multimodal integration of visual and written ethnography of Chinese social life.
