7.5-9.5 , signed by the photographer at bottom and again, with hand-lettered title on verso. The photo was taken in 1898; unknown when Leeson printed and colored this particular copy. Benjamin William (B. W.) Leeson (1866 - 1948) of Vancouver, B.C. was a scholar, customs official, and photographer who studied the Quatsino peoples of Vancouver Island. He began taking photographs in the Cariboo in 1887 and moved to Quatsino Sound in about 1894 where he and his father managed the salmon and clam cannery located on the opposite shore, as well as a store (J. L. Leeson & Son) selling clothes and provisions. He is particularly noted for his portraits of First Nations people. Collections of his photographs are in the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology Archives and the City of Vancouver archives. According to Leeson s note on the verso, this is photo number 14 from the latter. Books, Historical Documents, Autographs, and Ephemera -- Burns Bizarre specializes in the eclectic. We are a merger of two former booksellers 'Books on Main' [Ventura CA] and Armadillo & Dicker [Sacramento CA.] Most of our stock is rare or out-of-print - dating from the 18th century to the present. We do not sell reprint editions or book club editions unless they differ from the original in some way that makes them independently collectible. The name Burns' Bizarre comes from one of our father's enterprises in Chicago during the 1930's -- we are proud to continue his tradition of what is now eighty years of selling things people could easily live without.
We guarantee the condition of every book as it's described on the AbeBooks web sites. If you're dissatisfied with your purchase (Incorrect Book/Not as Described/Damaged) or if the order wasn't delivered, you're eligible for a refund within 30 days of the estimated delivery date. As collectors ourselves, we know that sometimes a book arrives that just isn't quite what we expected, even though it was accurately described. We will refund those too, but in that case, we would like you to contact us ...
Shipping costs are based on an average weight, including packaging, of 2 LB, or 0.9 KG. We usually don't charge extra if you are above that, but If your book is very heavy or special handling is required we may add an extra shipping charge. This usually occurs only for books being shipped via priority mail or internationally; the extra cost for shipping can make the difference in whether we make a profit or take a loss on the sale. We will always contact you first to get your approval for the extra charge. Sometimes shipping doesn't cost as much as we estimate -- if it's a negligible amount we just let it be but if it is substantial, we usually refund the excess shipping. We do not insure our shipments*; if you would like your package insured let us know and we will quote you the extra cost for doing so. (*Domestic items being sent by priority mail are automatically insured by the post office for up to $50.)
