Original real photo postcard illustrated with numerous b/w drawings and ms texts, with divided back. Postally unused. The image is near fine, the back, apparently mounted in then removed from an album, has patches of glue residue and scuffing. HMS Arethusa was a Royal Navy light cruiser built during 1933-4 and assigned to the 3rd Cruiser Squadron of the Mediterranean Station (or Fleet) in 1935, until its recall to the Home Fleet in early 1940. The prestigious Mediterranean Station was responsible for defending Britain's vital links with its Empire in the East. It had been headquartered in Malta, but due to the anticipated threat of Italian air attack, moved to Alexandria shortly before WW2. The itinerary suggests this card was issued soon after its move. It details Arethusa's movements in October 1938, leaving Aden 7th, through Suez 11th, Alexandria 12th, with mileages. It conducted exercises with the East Indies Squadron 4th, gunnery and torpedo exercises on 25th, 26th and 31st. Its football team heavily lost heavily to Egyptian Customs 14th, HMS Warspite 16th, HMS Shropshire 18th, and The Army (Alexandria) 30th. Sketch drawings show Signal Station at Aden, one of the gunnery and torpedo exercises ("Queen Bee Shoot Alexandria 31st Oct"), and the Sphinx and pyramids.
