Contemporary inked ownership inscription to recto of FFEP, scattered spotting. A revised and enlarged edition of Mrs. Barbara Hoflandâ s [nà e Wreaks] (bap. 1770, d. 1844) most popular children's book, the story of an impetuous artist whose erratic behaviour leaves his family in penury. The book was frequently reprinted in England, reaching a fourteenth edition by 1841, and was reprinted at least nine times in America. The Critical Review (Vol. IV, 1816, p.657) called it a 'very excellent performance.The story is throughout interesting and well managed, and a more excellent history for the instruction of the age as well as youth, has seldom fallen under our notice.'
