Beschreibung:

(Sydney : Halstead Printing) Sydney : Angus & Robertson, 1933 310 p., [9] leaves of plates : ill., port. ; 19 cm. Mabel ¿May¿ Tilton joined the Australian Army Nursing Service on 4 August 1915. She was attached to No. 1 Australian General Hospital. Review May Tilton, nursing sister with the A.I.F., 1915-18, has written a very good book, "The Grey Battalion." Her story is extremely well told and is full of typical Australian humor.SOME readers may be disappointed because she does not describe the more gruesome details of warfare, and others may say that her book is too much like a travel book, in parts; but no one can deny that the authorFix this text writes with a simplicity and sincerity which make very good reading - The Australian Women's Weekly , 1933. Buchbeschreibung Angus & Robertson, Sydney, 1933. Cloth boards. Buchzustand: Fair. No Jacket. First. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 310pp. B/w photographs. This is marked Fair because it was once in the library of the Murrumbeena Book Club and it has had the colourful half of the dustjacket adhered to the book's cover, in the manner of all libraries like this in the thirties. It has actually held up well, with the binding looking strong. The rear end paper has been removed. There is aged staining to the top of the print block. The spine is quite worn externally, and there's a little piece gone from the back part for half an inch, which doesn't affect much at all, except it can be seen from the side. The titling is legible enough on the spine but the book certainly looks as though it has had an appreciated life so far. It is, by all accounts a wonderfully written reminiscence, compiled by an A.I.F. Nursing Sister, who served from 1915 until the end of the war. This will never be Roneo'd in India and turned into a paperback, it is thus a rare and important account of the horrors of war, highlighting the humour, the camaraderie, the unselfishness and the endurance.
