1764 CARTE DU KATAY OU EMPIRE DE KAN A fine original antique map of thehistoric region of Cathay, roughly equating modern day northern China and southern Mongolia, engraved by Bellin for the monumental travel narrative, lHistoire Generale des Voyages. The map is intended to illustrate the Mongol empire of Genghis Khan. The various parts of the Great Wall of China are shown as crenellated lines, and the Korean peninsula is also shown. In the top left, next to the old Mongol capital of Karakorum, the scale is enclosed by a scalloped baroque cartouche.Size approx 33cm x 24cm. Condition is excellent with folds as issued.Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was a French hydrographer, geographer, and member of the French intellectual group the Philosophes. Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of Frances hydrographic office, member of the Acadandeacute;mie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministandegrave;re de la Marine.
