1769CARTE DE LISLE DE TAITI PAR LE LIEUTENANT J COOKby Bellin. Map of Tahiti in French Polynesia. The map depicts both Tahiti and Moorea. Created by Belling from James Cooks charts of the Island from his first voyage. Depth soundings are noted around the Islands coastline small trees and topography are also depicted.Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was among the most important mapmakers of the eighteenth century.In 1721, at only the age of 18, he was appointed Hydrographerto the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the firstIngandeacute;nieur de la Marineof theDandeacute;pandocirc;tdes cartes et plans de la Marine(the French Hydrographic Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. During his term as Official Hydrographer, theDandeacute;pandocirc;twas the one of themost active centers for the production of sea charts and maps in Europe. Their output included afolio-format sea atlas of France, theNeptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea atlases of the world, including theAtlas Maritimeand theHydrographieFrancaise. These gained fame anddistinctionall over Europe and were republished throughout the eighteenth and even in the nineteenthcentury.Bellin also producedsmaller format maps such as the 1764Petit Atlas Maritime, containing 580 finely-detailed charts. He also contributeda number of maps forthe 15-volumeHistoire Generale des Voyagesof Antoine Franandccedil;ois Prandeacute;vost.Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy, cementing Frances leading rolein European cartography and geography during this period. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers across the continent.Size approx 41.5cm x 21.5cm with folds folds as issued.
