GENUINE VINTAGE ADMIRALTY CHART SKETCH OFRIVER GAMBIASurveyed by Lieut. R. Owen, R.N., andthe officers of H.M.S. "LEVEN" 1826.Hydrographic charts or Admiralty charts are maps designed as aids to navigation at sea. They are produced by the British Admiralty. The Hydrographic Office, a sub-department of the British Admiralty, was established in 1795 and issued its first officially published Admiralty chart in November 1800. Admiralty charts show navigational hazards such as reefs and wrecks, and navigational aids such as lights, buoys and beacons. Nineteenth-century charts may show coastal elevations and topographic views, useful to identify landfalls and prominent fixing marks. They may also include details of coastal forts and other defenses. Admiralty charts are continually updated and corrected. These corrections were often made by amending the original engraved plate and issuing the chart as a new edition in other cases the chart was completely re-drawn.HMS Leven, was a 20-gun sixth-rate post ship (sometimes referred to as a sloop) of the Cyrus class, for the Royal Navy. She was built in Ipswich, and launched on 23 December 1813. She was notable as the survey ship that mapped large stretches of the coast of Africa in a voyage from 1821 to 1826, under the command of Captain William Fitzwilliam Owen.On their return journey, long stretches of the west African coastline and the River Gambia were surveyed, several slave ships were apprehended and support was given to British forces in the First Anglo-Ashanti War. By the time she returned home late in 1826, 30,000 nautical miles (56,000 km) of coast had been surveyed and 83 charts prepared. This had been achieved at a terrible cost half the crew of the two little ships had been killed by tropical diseases (Wikipedia).DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: Chart Number 609. Published London at the Admiralty 1892. Large corrections to 1928, Small corrections none. Sold by J. D. Potter, Agent for the Sale of the Admiralty Charts. Large chart on heavy grade paper with centre fold, measuring overall 102cm x 70cm. (40 inches x 27.5 inches). Good condition, some light dust soiling and general handling marks - please refer to images and examine carefully. Genuine rare (could not find another) chart with last correction (update) in 1928. This edition is genuinely almost 90 years old and not a recent copy or recent printing as, you will find, most charts are. As charts were updated (corrected) older versions would be discarded, and it is a wonder that these older editions have survived to this day.
