Map : 'Nova germaniae inferioris descriptio .'. (Map of The Netherlands.) Copper engraved map of the Netherlands by P. Bertius. With cartouche, compass rose and ships on the North See. Copperplate engraving on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Description: Rare scarse map originates from: 'Historie der Nederlandscher en haerder Na-buren Oolrogen [.]', by Emanuel van Meteren, 's-Gravenhage 1614, Artists and Engravers: The cartographer of this map is Petrus Bertius (1565-1629) was a Flemish theologian, historian, geographer and cartographer grown up in Beveren (Flanders). In 1593 he became a librarian and professor of mathematics at the University of Leyden. His main cartographic works are a miniature world atlas of 1600, a pocket atlas dedicated to the architecture, the maps and the views of towns of the German Empire of 1616 (26 engraved maps and 101 town views) and a version of Ptolemy's Geographia containing 28 maps engraved by Mercator for his 1578 edition and 14 maps of Ortelius' Parergon. This map was engraved by Nicholaas van Geelkercken. Condition: Fine; general age related toning; some light staining from handling. Paper loss on left and right side bottom corners, remargined and redrawn; Left and right margins remargined for ease of handling and to consolidate small tears in paper edges.
