DARBYSHIRE, MORDEN, 1722. ----TITLE: "Darby Shire by Rob't Morden". ----BACKGROUND: Derbyshire is located just west of Nottinghamshire near the middle of England. The map scale is approximately 3 miles per inch. Mountains are shown in profile and shading. Longitude, based on a prime meridian through London, is shown in minutes at the top and degrees at the bottom. The district names bear little resemblance to today s names. ----PUBLICATION DETAILS: Lower left under title cartouche: "Sold by Abel Swale, Awnsham & Iohn Churchill". 14"h x 16"w. Map by Robert Morden. Published in Edmund Gibson's translation of William Camden, "Britannia: or a Chorographical Description of Great Britain and Ireland ." 2nd ed., (London: Awnsham Churchill, 1722). The Britannia was first published by historian William Camden (1551-1623) in 1586, updated in a new edition by Gibson in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. ----CARTOGRAPHER: Robert Morden was an English publisher, bookseller, mapseller, cartographer, globe and instrument maker and is known for his prolific series of county maps in Camden's "Britannia". ----CONDITION: Light offset. He and his late wife Patricia had a web site and participated in Map Fairs and Book Fairs from Boston to Miami and west to Denver. In 2023 Luke re-established this business under the name Luke A Vavra Rare Maps and Books. The firm does not have a brick-and-mortar store but would not mind scheduled visitors.
