Washington, elephant folio, title page and legend sheets plus 20 double-page sheets (measuring 37 by 26.5 inches), including ten chromolithographed sheets and two tinted plates. ***CONTENT: This atlas, a masterpiece of American cartography, geologic surveying, and color lithography, is one of the most noteworthy and influential publications of Hayden's "Surveys of the Territories." Maps include: a triangulation map, drainage map, economic map (colored), and geological map (colored) covering the entire State and adjacent portions of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico at a scale of 12 miles to one inch; six topographical and six colored geological sheets, covering the region at 4 miles to the inch; two colored sheets of geological sections; and two sheets of exquisite tinted panoramic views drawn by William Henry Holmes. Natural features include river courses and drainage areas; named mountain ranges, peaks, passes, plateaus, hills and "parks"; forest, pasture and "sage" land; mineral districts, and more. Cultural features include cities and settlements, rail lines, roads, military forts, Indian reservations, mines, etc. Lithography by Julius Bien, New York; all sheets are on thick paper and have linen mounts. This publication was an ambitious and successful attempt to illustrate the geology of Colorado and adjacent areas an immense, physiologically and geologically complex region, largely in the Rocky Mountains. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, Fine copy, handsomely bound in 20th c. maroon linen, with a reddish morocco backstrip with gilt title lettering. The gilt-lettered title section from the original front cover has been excised and expertly mounted on the front board. The covers are very well preserved, and are fresh, clean, and bright. Later sandy-colored endpapers. Joints and hinges solid and strong; binding very firm. The atlas sheets are near pristine: very fresh, clean, and bright. No previous ownership indications.
