Excellent example of Colton's map of Illinois. Colton's map is a railroad map of the state. Operating within the visual hierarchy these railroads stand out. It was in 1855 that Chicago became the number one grain port in the world. The railroads along with the Illinois and Michigan Canal collected the grains and distributed lumber, merchandise and a plethora of goods.
